Donda West

Wednesday, November 21

Kanye West's mother, Donda West was laid to rest yesterday in Oklahoma City. I saw some news crews around when I arrived. It is nice to think of Jay Z, Beyonce, and John Legend attending a modest service in a small Oklahoma City church for their friend. When it came on the news, I was at my grandmother's house. I enjoyed explaining to her who Kanye West is. I had to smile.

Here is an article about the service, and here is a brief MTV clip of Dr. Donda West discussing the difference of confidence and arrogance in defense of her son. I like her quote, "Being totally self-confident is not necessarily arrogance."

From 'Hey Mama,' my favorite Kanye West song:
See you're, unbreakable, unmistakable
Highly capable, lady that's makin loot
A livin legend too, just look at what heaven do
Send us an angel, and I thank you...

Tell your job you gotta fake em out
Since you brought me in this world, let me take you out
To a restaurant, upper echelon
Imma get you a Jag, whatever else you want
Just tell me what kind of S-Type Donda West like?
Tell me the perfect color so I make it just right
It don't gotta be Mother's Day, or your birthday
For me to just call and say, hey Mama

after an iv of iced tea
dancing with my shadow in the living room
and thinking of times when you were the beat and I was the melody

as the inanimate world enters into my consciousness
I remember love
and having a really good reason to hold my breath

you are the morning after passion and the honor in my eyes
you are the picture on my wall and the blue fog in the hall
you were my reason for discarding reason

The Life

Sidewinder snakes and planetary explosions
These storm clouds mean almost as much as storms
And the rain falls only by the grace of God
Suck up the dust if you will not dare to blow it away

Sunday, November 11

This week my dad had his first meal in 55 days on his 60th birthday. He is in good health again. This was a good thing.

After the breakdown, after the battle, after the time that lasts forever

Wednesday, November 7

Enslaved by free will and coming together
Burdened only by education and ambition;
Freedom is nothing but a child destroying a player piano
To gain the chance to play it herself

When you stop wishing
When the end is not the end
A million possible beginnings
I will stop breaking down

When the war is over
My unfortunate lover
You will come again and last forever
For as long as these constellations remain

She has eyes for sorrow and laughter
And after the time that lasts forever
The air will burst with addictive harmony
And the crescent moon will rise as the sun swallows the sky

Happy Guy Fawkes Day

Monday, November 5

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up King and Parliament.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.

In other news, I have a 102 degree fever. It's a lot of fun. Okay, back to bed.

If I Could

Saturday, November 3

Weren't you the one that wanted to,
That needed to, say you were the one
Whatever we have both have done

This can't be love,
I know you think so

I'm calling tonight
I'm pressing the keys and wishing I knew you
And wishing I knew how to press send
And wishing it wasn't so late

This can't be love,
I know you think so

When you are in love with him and spending all your time
Away from the thought, but what can I say, as I am doing the same
Waiting for an occasion to wear my black coat and tie
Sitting on my steps, smoking, looking 'round for a chance, for this to die

Walking through fire
Just walking through
And this can't be love,
I know you think so

Weren't you the one that wanted to,
That needed to, say you were the one
Whatever we have both have done

Every other door I open
Is colored from my thoughts of you
And drowned for now
When my courage fails me

This can't be love,
I know you think so
This can't be,
I know you think so
This can't be love
It can't be

The Funeral

Band of Horses, out of S. Carolina. My favorite song of the week.

More rock singers need to have star quality beards.

Post Secret

Thursday, November 1

I've got a secret. Perhaps I should put it on a post card and mail it to the wind.
I believe in God again.
