stop counterculturalism now

A Graduate Student Avoiding his Ph.D., Being Productive,
or Being Creative and Useful in Any Real Way...

Tuesday, April 24

I have a feeling that my boat
has struck, down there in the depths,
against a great thing.

And nothing
happens! Nothing...Silence... Waves...

-Nothing happens? Or has everything happened,
and we are standing now, quietly, in the new life?

Oklahoma and Watermelon

Thursday, April 19

Because all other important legilation has already been written and signed into law, Sen. Don Barrington (R-Lawton) sponsored a bill in the Senate Tuesday to declare the watermelon the state vegetable.
"The controversy on whether watermelon is a fruit or vegetable has been officially decided by the Oklahoma Legislature," Barrington said. He said watermelon comes from the cucumber and gourd families, which are classified as vegetables.
The bill now goes to Gov. Brad Henry.

My thoughts:
1) Great... Oklahomans are bright and intelligent and good people, but this makes us look like idiots
2) Shouldn't the gov't be doing something more better good with their time?
3) You know, I really do like watermelon... I wonder where I can get some?
4) It'll be fun to be in Oklahoma this evening and discuss the difference of fruits and vegetables (it's just the seeds, right?)

When we take walks and wander around, aimlessly, I'm struck by how the world is a dream. The words in my mind slip into my cotton mouth and I watch your lips move and your silver smile respond knowingly, as if our thoughts are dancing through our words. I know it's just a dream and I'm caught in the space in between the cells of our bodies and the atoms in the atmosphere, but I can't help but pull you into my head and set you free. The taste of the damp air surrounds us and I embrace it.

I never meant to be so nice to you, to be so secure. There is confidence around me like the calm at the center of sadness. There are familiar clouds in my eyes and falling in love with you is the strangest pain I've ever known.

I am no longer me, and you are no longer you. Surely now this is a dream. This comfort and subtle self-destruction have lasted far too long. I am beyond it all, far from the tiny world of the past and yet connected to everything I've ever known. You are all I will ever know, and we've never met. We've never met again. We've never been in the right place at the right time. Make me forget wakefulness until we come down from this impossible place. To love fully and openly, with all that I have, I place this wonderful burden into the curve of the back of your palm. I give you every place I've called home. I wait for your dreams to end.

Wild, wild horses

Wednesday, April 18

In the news today, "Preparations to sedate as many as 300 horses stabled at Belgrade's racecourse to keep them calm during a Rolling Stones concert have enraged Serb animal lovers." (link)

The Fark.com headline: "Keith Richards has changed his name to "Belgrade Horses"

The longer set-up for the same joke: "Veterinarians were at first concerned where they would get enough drugs for the procedure, but soon found an adequate supply. No word yet on Keith Richard's feelings on his stash being co-opted."

I came across a very interesting website discussing homosexuality and Christianity. They point to evidence from the New and Old Testaments affirming same-sex relationships, even a passage where Jesus mentions "eunuchs who have been so from birth." The Greek word for eunuchs is not specific to castrated men and is actually a more broad term often associated with homosexuality. I've always found discrimination of any sort antithetic to Jesus' message and so I find reading some of these passages with a better understanding of the language very appealing.

My Chemical Romance and Muse

So My Chemical Romance and Muse are on the bill together in San Antonio... I just read an entertaining article in the Daily Texan commenting about how collegiate Muse fans should relax a bit and try not to be so uppity. It's culture clash humor at its finest.
"Students are pissed, the issue being baffling resentment from Muse heads wondering what their British saviors are doing opening for 'MTV filth,' 'exploitative 'mainstreamo'' and 'a bunch of wrist-slitting pussies.'

But seriously, Muse is way better.

Kurt Vonnegut dies at 84

Thursday, April 12

When the last living thing
has died on account of us,
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor
of the Grand Canyon,
"It is done."
People did not like it here.

If you know me you know how I keep up with happenings in the rap game. I'm all over it. Seriously. All over it.

Anyway, thought you should know that "After a well-publicised beef with Champagne makers Louis Roederer Cristal and subsequently boycotting the brand, rapper Jay-Z has now signed a deal to endorse rival brand Ace Of Spade."

You might remember awhile back the Cristal people made a statement about how they wished that rappers would stop putting Cristal in their lyrics and videos. Probably not a good move, since rap music sells a lot of bubbly.

I hope you feel more cultured now. You can go about your business. (link)

Sofia Coppola directed the video for "This Here Giraffe" by The Flaming Lips...? The Lips play their instruments in Wayne Coyne's house, in their front yard in Oklahoma City, and then they all go to the Zoo. Weird. You gotta love commentaries on music video DVDs.
