imagery and silence

Thursday, March 22

I got very angry in the water
The black walls were closer than they should be
The air was getting thin and my eyes were thick with smoke
There was fire nearby, red roses, and too much jet-lag

~

Silence at night is awareness
I held your hand by the fingertips
The tiles at our feet were green, blue, brown, and black
Every kiss was a thunderclap

Things I learned over Spring Break

Monday, March 19

1) Making friends is less important than kicking ass at croquet
2) Jumping around really is fun
3) I might somehow be more Punk than I would have thought (to that end I've picked up some Clash and Ramones and downloaded People Who Died by Jim Carroll to compliment my earlier punk collection which consisted entirely of several Mclusky songs)
4) Recording ideas with a voice recorder is great fun
5) People are meant to sleep during the night and not the day

One question that remains unanswered:
Why is the rum always gone?

Sunday, March 18

from 4am to 5am
there is no one
other than Jeff Buckley
more soothing
a near absence of gravity
to my ears
cold and silent
and louder than shining stars

"A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul."

Wednesday, March 14

It's trippy to be sitting in my office on a rainy day, thinking about SXSW and doing a literature search online and coming across a journal article that I've published during the search. It's just strange.

300

Frank Miller talks about 300.

"I learned first that the story of Thermopylae was real, then as the film went on I had to take my father aside and ask him if the good guys were going to lose. I'd never heard of such a thing, and when they fell it was a formative moment for me. It changed my idea of what a hero was. Up until then, it always seemed that heroes won, and they got a medal, or they got the girl, yet these men died in the middle of nowhere, sacrificing their lives for the greater good."

Or, if you want to know something about what really happened at the battle of Thermopylae but you don't want to read any Herodotus, this historian has an opinion.
