A Graduate Student Avoiding his Ph.D., Being Productive,
or Being Creative and Useful in Any Real Way...

Complaint call to Verizon, the boss does not know the difference between .002 dollars and .002 cents. It's 22 minutes long but funny.

And another thing to make you smile:

Cheer

Thursday, December 28

Christmas has been great. My grandmother turned 90 on Christmas Eve and 19 of us gathered to help her celebrate and eat caramel cream cake. As mentioned in the previous post we played enough Nintendo Wii for my cousins' wives to complain of being sore in the shoulders. I received some thoughtful and excellent gifts and I just went to a camera shop here in OKC and bought myself a gift as well. I had been considering getting a Canon SD800 IS point-and-shoot camera but instead I dove into the amateur consumer D-SLR market with the new Nikon D40. I like it. I have only taken a few shots thus far, but you can see them on my flickr page.

The Aleksey Vayner CV Video
, a video resume sent to a lot of places on Wall Street from a guy my counsin knew at Yale. It's great. Really great. The guy is very David Brent-esque.

You won't really get the parady by the kid from Arrested Development without watching it, but it is even better. Watch it here.

Also, Andy Samburg directed a parady of it as well. See that here.

Birthdays, Tom Waits, and James Bond

Tuesday, December 12

Because Jeff Holland blogs about the things I never get around to, here are some of the things he said recently:

About taking time off from work near your birthday: "Me, I take whatever Monday and Tuesday are off around my birthday and have a nice little holiday. Take care of the things you need to, treat yourself to something nice, go to bed whenever you please, and not worry about getting up on time the next day. It works well for me. Today I cleaned my car and put together the Christmas tree, caught a movie, and am finishing off the evening blogging in the best bar I know. My basement. The lighting is exactly the way I like it, the seats are comfortable, the pool table's free, it's completely empty, and Tom Waits is the only thing on the jukebox."

About Casino Royale: "It's an action movie. It won't change the world. But every time I see an action movie with an honest-to-god character arc, I wonder why this doesn't happen more often." link

Want to dance with The Flaming Lips on New Years EVE in LA? Uh, yes you do. Go watch the Youtube video about it, then if I know you then please send me your video too so I can witness your skills.

p.s. There is now a Flaming Lips Alley in OKC between Reno and Sheriton in the Bricktown district. heh. The link goes to an Oklahoma City news segment about it.

God Is An Astronaut

Thursday, December 7

Music you may like:
Being a band without a full time, proper vocalist, God Is An Astronaut find that song titles, and not necessarily lyrics, are an easier way of conveying a certain theme, "We spend along time coming up with song titles. Basically they should give some insight to what the song is or does."
Amen.

Overestimation bias in mate competition

Wednesday, December 6

This article from the New York Times is not much longer than this psychology article abstract. Yes, the journal abstract is more concise and to the point but that occurs at the cost of confusing the average reader. Without writing for a broader audience, I think researchers risk not properly disseminating psychological research to the general public.
