stop counterculturalism now

A Graduate Student Avoiding his Ph.D., Being Productive,
or Being Creative and Useful in Any Real Way...

Sunday, October 30

I went on a Duck tour of Austin. Friends from Durant came to visit. Many parties, new neighbors. I used to be able to sleep in when I stay up late, now I always wake up. But now this Daylight Savings thing... it's all chaos. I want chaos.

I met a british person who taught me some basic english swearing, which I promptly forgot do to the rum I had consumed... but the sit-chiation reminded me of Eurotrip:
"So I tell the swamp donkey to sock it before I give her a trunky in the tradesman's entrance and have her lick me yardballs!"

"Wow. You guys are on a completely different level of swearing here."

Rob Schneider's Hard R (2006)...

So, I was looking through Bill Murray's IMDB site... because he is funny, and I see that a movie is in production that was written by Norm Macdonald, John Murray (Bill's brother? -- he was in Scrooged also) and Rob Schneider. David Spade will be in it too. Anyone know anything about the flick?

In 26 minutes, without leaving my house, I have the new Nada Surf album. Next time they play in Austin, I'll buy myself a t-shirt and buy them a Coke. My neighbor is playing guitar, the Pearl Jam cover of Last Kiss. I have a candle lit on my glass table. It smells like slowly evaporating red wax, which it is. I watched the Gods Must Be Crazy and a Touch of Pink. I missed hours of school because I hate going there.

I am now obsessed with wholeness.

I bought fruit to have in my apartment so my grandmother will think I eat well. She deserves to not worry too much.

Urban Dictionary: shocker: "'After I gave her the shocker and left she always came back, rapping at my chamber door. I told her never more, I would not again shock that whore. But she continued rapping on my chamber door, and before i knew it, she was on my floor....begging...MORE...MORE!!!!' -Edgar Allan Poe"

glass slippers
virgin hard lemonade on crushed ice
the first snowfall, black tea
white flowers

i can't write about you
with glass slippers
and cold feet
and i know you can't relate
but i miss being lonely
and i need to travel and somehow
feel cement slip past my fingertips...
sliding across the air
the wet night swallowed my fear

I want to just write my thoughts
In the sand
I want your name in the sand
And I want you to never know

The wave could come fast or slow
It could douse my thoughts with surf
Or it could be brittle dry
As it washes your name away

And I have to ask, Why is it always water?
I just know the water can wash away the words
But leave us what we need
Indelibly present

I should want to let you go
I should want your happiness
And nothing else
Unselfishly

But really, I have a secret:
I just want to see and hear and hold you
And I want you to make it all better
When I write your name in the sand
I want it to leave your love for me

I cannot understand
Why it fills me with joy
When I see your name
The sand seems so cruel

Because all I really want
Is to be a better person
Back in the past
With you
When being a good person mattered

And I am afraid you will never understand how much this hurts
And I'll never understand
How to let you go

And there is no way I can see you and hear you
And not know love for you
It mutes my heart
Without washing me away

I want to just write my thoughts
In the sand
I want your name in the sand
And I want you to never know

So, for one of my psychology courses I have been reading that

"Love, partnership, and marriage have been found to be positively and highly correlated with subjective well-being, as well as with one’s health (Myers, 1999)."

So, as Jack Johnson, the Grateful Dead, Andrew Bird, and Queen come up on shuffle on iTunes, I also have been reading about the political implications of this research. If anyone happens to be interested in political theory, I'd like to know what you think of the Communitarian perspective, mentioned in another article I read for this week.

My suggestion on how to decrease the college gender gap: Just let high-school boys know that 57% of college students are women. Seems like a good ratio to me.

Tuesday, October 11

I am sitting next to the lake here, avoiding doing work for school, there is so much water that I'd rather just sit and listen to it move around under my feet, under the deck.
  • It was a rainy day here; how about there?
  • Who reads this stuff anyway?
I talked today about chaotic thinking and colored highlighting and things that I've never had. But I also talked about words and photography and looking at something static and beautiful for hours since my mind cannot hold onto such things. But also, beyond those photographs, sitting next to the water and seeing the shadows and light and crazy birds at play... Fulfillment.

Strangely enough.

Clerks, Kevin Smith, it's to be a sequel... yea! The best thing to ever come out of New Jersey.

Also: new RomComZom genre movie being made in Ireland. Title: Boy Eats Girl. Nice, eh?

Note: RomComZom will make sense as a genre if you have seen Shaun of the Dead; it's romantic comedy with zombies, of course.

$200 million in bullets

Monday, October 3

Concise article by Andy Rooney about the U.S.'s miltary spending... did you know we spend $200 million a year on bullets?

Then again, some very interesting dissenting discussion on fark.com, such as:
I want eight Sea Wolf submarines because when the Chinese decide to put forth some blue-water effort, I want ours to be better. I want a few more cruise missiles because when we have to start knocking down North Korea's military infrastructure in response to either an artillery attack on South Korea or a ballistic attack on either Japan or our own West coast, we can do so without having to incinerate the vast majority of his enslaved population. I want better tanks, planes, helicopters, ships, and guns because when American soldiers go into battle, they better damn well be the best.

If this means you or your friends have to work at McDonalds to support your graduate studies in lemming masturbation, fine by me. If this means NPR has to suck up a little harder to contributers, good. If this means AMTRAK goes the way of the dodo, it's about damn time. And for damn sure if it means an end to paying farmers to lay fields fallow and artificially inflate prices, well that's gonna be cool by me too.
