A Graduate Student Avoiding his Ph.D., Being Productive,
or Being Creative and Useful in Any Real Way...

Monday, May 30

once I dated an actor, she was working on a play
by opening night we had nothing left to say
we hit the wall it was not resilient
she said that she was hungrier than I was brilliant
and who the hell was I to disagree?
didn't you used to be someone who meant something to me?

Crimea

"The Crimea have been described as drawing inspiration from Dusty Springfield, Leonard Cohen, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and The Pixies. Only having really listened to two of the artists/groups on that list, I'd say that the Flaming Lips and Pixies comparisons are warranted in the best sense possible. The Crimea write about life and its joys and tribulations in a homely but oddball manner, and aren't afraid to lend an enthusiastically raw guitar edge to proceedings."
Interview Q: What was the most unusual gig that The Crimea have already played?
A: It was probably South by South West, there was about 10 people there, we were in pieces, and I fell on my arse. It was unusually shit. We used to play a lot of house parties in our East London days.
I really like this band, but I missed them at SXSW. They do a good song called "lottery winners on acid" which I'll send you if you like.

Another Day

Friday, May 20

Another day
Staring out of my window
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
Wishing things would clear
No need to rush
I ain't gonna worry
Any moment my sorrow
Is bound to disappear
Sometimes I tell myself
I'm better off without you
And then I have to face the emptiness
I feel inside without you
And find a way to make it through another day
I need a way
to find the truth within me
Accept the fact that I love you
My blue eternity
I hear they say
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
I must have the heart of a lion
Sifting through love's remains
Sometimes I tell myself
I'm better off without you
And then I have to face the emptiness
I feel inside without you
And find a way to make it through another day
My love for you is etched
Forever in my memory
Now I realize that life goes on
Even though you're not here with me
I wake up looking forward to another day
A day of living without you
Just another day

Clinging is suffering

Excerpt:

You've probably heard the rumor that "Life is suffering" is Buddhism's first principle, the Buddha's first noble truth. It's a rumor with good credentials, spread by well-respected academics and Dharma teachers alike, but a rumor nonetheless. The truth about the noble truths is far more interesting. The Buddha taught four truths -- not one -- about life: There is suffering, there is a cause for suffering, there is an end of suffering, and there is a path of practice that puts an end to suffering. These truths, taken as a whole, are far from pessimistic. They're a practical, problem-solving approach -- the way a doctor approaches an illness, or a mechanic a faulty engine. You identify a problem and look for its cause. You then put an end to the problem by eliminating the cause.

Muse

"Thoughts of a Dying Atheist"
In your whispers
Trapped beneath my pillow
You won't let me see
Your memories
And I know you're in this room
I'm sure I heard you sigh
Frozen in between
Where our worlds collide
Is a death on this earth just a temporary separation?
Love can only be selfish while we exist here.
Marriage can only be until death.
Am I insane to think this song is about the death of a relationship, not the death of a person?

And what about "Sing for Absolution"?
a kiss that can't renew
I only dream of you
my beautiful
All we see is temporary
And it scares the hell out of me
I wish perceptions would never change
And I could know what was best for you
For whatever purpose, that is all I can see

"Love does not delight in evil but delights in the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves"

Did I food poison myself again or is something else amiss?
its in the way that she poses
its in the things that she puts in my heart
her stories are boring and stuff
shes always calling my bluff
she puts the, she puts the weights in to my little heart and she gets in my room and she takes apart

big presentation, big big deal, but I did great
friends from college visiting me this summer, & friends from high school from the east
and a month off at the end of the summer
working on big PhD project
driving across the country
coming back to good places
visiting new beautiful locations
and closing my eyes, with warmth and sadness
appreciating good places I have here

thank you for supporting me and for warm wishes
friendship and love are their own reward
