A Graduate Student Avoiding his Ph.D., Being Productive,
or Being Creative and Useful in Any Real Way...

Tuesday, August 23

Coffee. Tea. Wireless internet. I am catching up on neglected research. So much is packaging, typing. Uncreative. Repetitive. I am dizzy, a sickness making my head feel heavy. My eyes droop.
It is so important to take breaks from work, especially when the work does not fulfill you. My eyes need rest, to focus on the horizon instead of a high-resolution LCD screen 18 inches from my face. It’s tunnel vision, the way the mind narrows and narrows, shrinking my perceptions, focusing in on my work.
I’d rather be breathlessly listening. Waiting for someone to speak, waiting for the sun to set or for grass to grow. Waiting for a flower to open after a spell of rain. I’d rather be connected to coincidence and raw emotion and silence.
