A Graduate Student Avoiding his Ph.D., Being Productive,
or Being Creative and Useful in Any Real Way...

had a long day
school was okay, I have a lot to do and a lot of me to do it
there was a housewarming

'Quarter Century'
Time places knowledge and opportunity amidst
Wrinkles on her forehead
And sleepy ice-kitten drawings
Silhouette strange ripples of change
In the silver new morning daybreak

I'm listening to Paperboy - Ditty while a pink circle and now a weird alien looking rainbow float across my screen. Wow.

In actual news: I'm still working on my Dave Chappell accent. No progress.

When I was a young one, when my soup was too hot my mother would put in an ice-cube to cool it down. Now, when it's too hot, I usually burn my tongue. Almost always. It's so hard to wait for cool soup.

New Scientist: The Last Word Science Questions and Answers

New Scientist: "What causes extra drunkenness when drinks are mixed?"

some news website: Campaign officials said in interviews that they plan substantial positive advertising about the president, focused on his proposals rather than accomplishments, when they begin spending tens of millions of dollars on the airwaves next month. But they made it clear that many of the ads will accuse the Democratic front-runner of "hypocrisy," in McKinnon's word, in part by reaching back into his early career.

I am drunk from a happy hour with psychology people and am currently listening to a live version of Coldplay - Yellow.

and it was all yellow

I remember a SNL skit line... "I liked them better when they were U2"

I wonder what my personality would be like if I didn't always remember... if I wasn't. Funny.

Bitter? Cuttingly intelligent. My brother has a mensa IQ. I miss him and my sister. Maybe I should fly home next weekend. It would be free!

look how they shine for you

aside: just because I am becoming an avid counterculturalist, does that mean I can't like the new buzzworthy: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps?

point: "romance is dead. it was acquired in a hostile takeover by hallmark and disney, homogenized, and sold off piece by piece." add to that the fact that even wholesome family stuff is still for sale on two fronts: case in point > hillary duff, disney's young cash crop-- part of a media process exploiting the pure-virgin moralistic ideal to sell optical music disks and $8 movie stubs, has also recently been seen in a music video more steamy than any I was in when I was 15. Way to make a profit on two fronts, mega-Disney-co. Walt (the sexist animation-genius which he was), would be proud.

counterpoint: true romance will always be pure. but it comes from homemade arts-n-crafts and is not something you can get at Wallmart.

if you need a break from mainstream media, turn off your television and think for yourself, create or participate in the resounding cacophony of enjoyable media improbabilities: case in point > The Thnikkaman: "yea, shut up kids" (remember to click around at the end of the email).

Be a good counterculturalist today! (man, this entry was obtuse... I better go study and put my time wasting to better use). Yours,

Saw Julian Marley tonight against my better judgement in that I should have studied. However, I enjoyed. Myself. Now I am listening to the Pixies, Hey. Julian Marley was very tall and skinny, and dressed like papa Marley. I wonder how Julian Lennon turned out. To be a rock star kid.

I was thinking that it seems criminal to keep me at a near-death stress-work elevation for two-years, just so I can become a member of my chosen profession in the way I want to be. I came across a Samuel Clements quote which seemed appropriate:

"Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the
age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen."
- Mark Twain

The song still captivates me, 'So Why So Sad'

My smile as real as a hyena's
Burns an expressway to my skull
But I'll stick myself together again
Spirit so low that I no longer pretend

So why so sad
You live and you love
So why so sad
Dependent on above
Searching for the dead sea scrolls
So why, so why so sad

Ultramodern Antique: "Dear Sarah McLachlin:
Whatever it was that put you in a perpetual funk? GET THE FUCK OVER IT. " I found this interesting because, as of three days ago, I was discussing with some SM fans (no not that kind) about how I would have thought that Sarah would have matured into more positive writing over time in order to grow with her audience. I imagine if she captured the hearts of youngsters (12-28) with her previous escapades of sweet sad and sometimes sultry rock, that as those kids got older they would probably be less depressed and want to listen to a less sad Sarah sing with her beautiful voicebox. But Sarah still sells. Records! What's her secret?

blonde on blonde

Dear friend,
I wonder where I want to live. Northeast? Texas? California? I've never lived in the west... Back east had a chill in the air, a chill on the people, but if I never lived there I would never have understood so many things... the meaning of the Nada Surf lyric:

i've got no time i wanna lose
to people with something to prove
what can you do but let them walk
and make your way down the block

I am beginning to think I only understand my emotions after filtering them through music. Certain songs just tap that long lost lust for a real life that everyday things and everyday people seem to obscure. Then again, sometimes I write my words down in an expulsion of words on paper, a process that sometimes ends up poetic. hmm... I'll share an excerpt from yesterday. Who reads this rant anyway?

in fact it's fantastic
training for choices and not for soul searching truth
agnostic automatic and always

I think I was being sarcastic. What's a better descriptor for my lackluster faith in society and the minds we produce? There needs to be a new word for it. It's not sarcasm... damn. It's something, (back to music), that I think is tapped in the old Ned's Atomic Dustbin album Godfodder [pick it up at a used CD store, you'll love it]. I love everything about it. The loathing, the pride, the verbal contradictions that emphasize the message---

when she looks at me
in that tone of voice
she don't need to make a noise
i can read her thoughts
in capital letters
i've lost her since i've met her

Well, all my love to you and yours,
