stop counterculturalism now

A Graduate Student Avoiding his Ph.D., Being Productive,
or Being Creative and Useful in Any Real Way...

I miss subtlety. The nuance between shades of meaning. That crack in the clouds in the storm where only one ray of light comes through. Subtlety is a spotlight... But on what?

And I miss that quality in conversations when it becomes too clever to contain falsehoods. I miss public speakers who are somehow both breathless and brilliant, where you sense quick subtle thought and movement, quick but not rushed. The individual notes of the symphony.

And I miss reading a good book instead of watching CNN.
I need to delete my cable or some-such-thing.

Here is a quote I liked:

"Human subtlety will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does nature because in her inventions nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluous."
Leonardo da Vinci

I liked this one too.

"Perfect love is rare indeed - for to be a lover will require that you continually have the subtlety of the very wise, the flexibility of the child, the sensitivity of the artist, the understanding of the philosopher, the acceptance of the saint, the tolerance of the scholar and the fortitude of the certain"

So in that second quote which quality do you think is the hardest to think about getting to? Is it the last one or is that just me?

"the fortitude of the certain"? I feel like that is something that is missing in our culture. But I don't know; that is a good question.
