I-Ching

Monday, September 29

Dear friend,
My oracle from last night: Fu becoming Ta Kuo. Returning and comfort followed by great injury (to only myself) requiring a sustained effort to pass through. Like a tree in a flood.

If you want to try computerized divination, go here. I prefer throwing dimes, but you have to follow your own Tao, I suppose.

"Me, the man? Then why do I feel like such a fuck up most of the time? It must have something to do with Einstein's Relativity. Two observers, watching the same thing from different vantage points may see different things...God! How profound! haha"

I've made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby

I can't figure out if this song is pro or anti suicide.
Suicide is Painless - Theme from M*A*S*H - version by the Manic Street Preachers

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realise that I can see

That suicide is painless
It brings so many changes
And I can take or leave them if I please (chorus)

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card of some delay
So this is all I have to say

(chorus)

The sword of time will pierce our skin
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger watch I bring

(chorus)

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied oh why ask me

(chorus)

50 blocks

Dear friend,
I walked last night for 4.5 miles, 50 city blocks, and I only had two beers. That's a record for me I believe. I needed the endorphins though.

Best Joke Ever

Monday, September 15

This guy walks into a pub and half his head is a big orange. He says: 'I'll have a pint of lager, please.' And the barman says: 'Excuse me, I couldn't help noticing, but half your head appears to be a big orange.' And the boy goes: 'Yeah, had that for a while now.'

So the barman says: 'How did that come about, if you don't mind me asking?' And the boy says: 'I was in this old junk shop when I found a lamp and when I gave it a rub this genie appeared.

He offered me the standard three wishes, and I said: 'For my first wish, I'd like every woman I ever meet to fall madly in love with me.' So the genie waves his genie hands and suddenly there's women looking at me. Then the genie says: 'What will your second wish be?' I said: 'I'd like a wallet with $1million in it, and I can never lose it, it can't be destroyed, and every time I spend any of the money, it'll be replenished.' And the genie says: 'Your wish is granted. Now, what will your third wish be?' So I said: 'For my third wish, I'd like half my head to be a big orange.'

Family guy: Family Guy, the movie? "Now-cancelled series is proving to be more popular in its afterlife than it was when it was in active production." If you have a good show, you have to stick with it. Then you would not have to make direct-to-DVD movies later.

Dalai Lama vs. cognition scientists

Sunday, September 14

A mind is a terrible thing to waste (with meditation): "'According to what I know about the brain, it should not be possible,' said Harvard psychologist Stephen Kosslyn of claims by some Buddhists that they can hold images in their heads for hours at a time."

More science: Our brains will be the models for increasing the memory capacity of machines. Later, skynet takes over.

Party

Thursday, September 11

Looks like Fri and in a week I will be at happy hours, and a party at my place. Seems strange that I wanted to have more fun last year so bad and now it is so much easier to round people up. Hooray for living in the same town for a second year and knowing the 'beat'.

Jason Mraz

... was great in concert. Very impressed. Changed my whole outlook on the genre of young male singers. I had previously only respected Jack Johnson, because he seems to do his own thing a lot more than the genre-clones (as I used to think, and still do). Anyway, here are some Mraz lyrics you have probably heard if you listen to the radio. But read them, maybe they will seem different:

Be right back after this, the unavoidable kiss
Where the minty fresh death breath is sure to outlast this
Catasrophy, DANCE WITH ME

On my symphony experience

I love strings and horns and drums. I attach different emotions to different instrument groups... some are background, environmental emotion; some are the characters. And violin is like the rush of air you hear around you when important things are happening.

Long day

Dear friend,
Today was a long day. It is now after a long day. Or soon will be. I have really challenged myself today to see what is possible in the future. It is sometimes hard to see the forest, with all these trees around. It is. And I want to see the trees.

But I remember a bumper-sticker I saw here in Austin: That was Zen, this is Tao. I think about that. The past is full of powerful experiences, wonderful times, but right now, here and now, there is the Tao, there is the Way. The future is in the future, Zen is in the past. Today, tonight, tomorrow, there is whatever Tao I choose. And if I give up my fears, and I have trust, the way will show itself to me. I don't have to chase it. It is here already, around me, waiting for me to notice it. I love trees.

Yours,

Dennis Miller on Buying Mexico and Canada

Border Disorders: "Here's one way we can solve our border problems: Why don't we just buy Mexico and Canada? I mean the continent is already called North America. Somebody was trying to tell us something. Thank about it: That border to the south would just be that little Central America thing. We could put in some turnstiles."

I decided to play around with a new template. My perfectionist side is coming through though. I like it and I hate it. I better get some sleep though, maybe I will be less hungover and less perfectionistic tomorrow.

Bill Cosby still cool

"We are going to have a rally, a pep rally, not for the golfers, not for the swimmers, not for the basketball team, not for the football team -- but for the students, for the faculty, for the administration, for alumni, for the town," Cosby. Baylor University pep-rally.

What an awesome guy. An older quote I still love, "dad is great, we gots the chocolate cake." :)

Other news you should know:
1. For my friends who just got home from the war, you came a little too soon and missed some free stuff! The Germans were giving away beer. "A cold beer is a cold beer," McKnight said.
2. Some of you guys may have guessed it: Sting a dirty, dirty liar. In other news, tantric sex is still intreaging... And just because Sting can't do it...

A thought

Looks do matter. But we (as people, and possibly especially because of our culture and media) tend to think they are all that matters, and that isn't true. Looks are looks, personality is personality. We need both, but neither is ever everything. If you want to nurture yourself, excercise and take time for yourself to read or relax or have fun. Do it all. You deserve it.

I know that I worry about getting old and gaining wrinkles, etc, losing my hair, etc. But man (in the gender neutral sense), if it happens, there is not a whole lot I should do. Or can do (barring what is often radical surgery).

And really, I should think about how beautiful wrinkles are. They mean I have done a lot of smiling and laughing. And that means I am more beautiful. Just as my "beer belly" is also a record of a lot of happy memories with my friends. I would hate to give those up. Is it not a Buddha belly, allowing me to be more generous and happy with myself?

All my love to my friends, and cheers to the rest of you,

J. Depp

"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots."

Good point. So, he comes across anti-America. But so what? He lives in France most of the time, he doesn't need to love us. He's a good movie guy, intelligent. I'd rather him talk jive about my country in an intelligent way than listen to people who love the U.S. but do not really appreciate its freedoms. New immigrants appreciate the freedom we have more than we do. It is refreshing to them. We should take a step back every now and again and articulately say, "dag ya'll" and reflect, appreciating what we have. Even the freedom to say we don't like our government's foreign policy. The freedom to vote those responsible for something we don't like out of office. Mr. Depp, good going, see you in the Once Upon a Time in Mexico (or whatever it is) movie. Oh, in conclusion, there has never been a better Hunter S. Thompson.

Depp vs. French Fries

Cheers to you all,

Food for thought from Use Your Illusions:

"Once you made that money it costs more now
It might cost a lot more than you'd think"

"You get what you pay for
An freedom's real high priced"

What is the price of freedom? It may be a lot more than we think.

Tea, a response from a SCN fan:

(see previous post - The Proof is in the Pudding re: Red Wine and Smoking)

"The thing about red wine and smoking is also true of tea. breaks down the nicotine. That is why the chinese, even though they smoke 10 times as much as north americans, still have lower cancer rates. In the article you linked, they say at the bottom that the alcohol wasn't the factor......it was the polyphenols (an antioxidant that green tea is very rich in). Alcohol wasn't the factor since the acohol free one worked the same."

So, all you alcoholics, if you prefer to believe otherwise, feel free to forget this latest information. It is your life. Try to be aware of the truth, and do nice things for yourself. That is all.
